Harmful algal blooms (HABs) occur in lakes, reservoirs, and wetlands around Utah.
🤢 Blooms can produce toxins which make people and animals sick
👀 Blooms often are green or blue-green in color and vary widely in texture: they may look like spilled paint, pea soup, grass clippings, or floating mats
🐶 Common symptoms of HAB exposure in dogs include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, muscle tremors, and/or seizure.
Contact your veterinarian immediately if your dog exhibits any of these symptoms after swimming in suspect water

SUN SAFETY TIPS:
☀️ Apply Sunscreen
Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Reapply every two hours, and immediately after swimming or sweating.
☀️ Wear Protective Clothing
Choose long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses to help guard against sun damage.
☀️ Seek Shade
Try to avoid direct sun exposure during the peak UV hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.—especially at higher altitudes.
☀️ Stay Hydrated and Sun-Smart
Don`t let dehydration sneak up on you—carry water, take breaks in the shade, and always plan ahead.

Not sure what that green stuff is? Here are some tips to help you decide:
• Stick Test: Use a stick to pull algae out of the water. If it looks like long strands of hair or thread, it’s most likely a non-toxic form of algae.
• Duckweed Test: Look closely at the growth. Do you see tiny leaves or roots? If it looks like a mini-plant, it’s most likely non-toxic duckweed.
🔍 See something else? Harmful algal blooms can look like spilled paint, pea soup, green globules, or grass clippings. They are usually green or blue.
If you think you’ve found a harmful algal bloom, grab some photos and report it to the Department of Environmental Quality at (801) 536-4123.
